How it works

  1. We watch your area

    Each week we check the Food Standards Agency's public hygiene data for your council.

    We look for new businesses awaiting their first inspection, and new 0-2 ratings.

  2. You approve the letters

    We write short, friendly letters on your letterhead, offering a free pest survey.

    You see the list and the wording first. Nothing goes out without your yes.

  3. We post them. You win the work.

    Letters go by post. Limited companies can also get one short email follow-up.

    We leave out home-based businesses and anyone who has opted out.

    Replies come straight to you. Each month you get a simple results report.

One commercial contract for a café or takeaway is typically worth several hundred pounds a year or more. So a single win can cover several months of the fee. (Contract values vary by firm and premises.)

Where does the data come from?

The Food Standards Agency's food hygiene rating data. It is published openly under the Open Government Licence.

FirstVisit is independent. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the FSA or any council.

Is it legal to write to these businesses?

Yes, when it is done properly. Every letter has a privacy notice and an easy opt-out.

We keep a permanent opt-out list, skip home-based premises and have a written legitimate-interests assessment.

Emails go only to limited companies, LLPs and other corporate bodies. Never to sole traders or ordinary partnerships without consent.

Will the letters embarrass a business with a low rating?

No. Letters never quote or criticise a rating. They simply offer a free survey and practical help.

Who signs the letters?

You do. Letters go out in your firm's name, on wording you have approved.

We act as your data processor under a written data processing agreement.

What if my council is already taken?

We'll tell you straight away. We'll offer the nearest free council, or put you first in line.

Do all councils publish new registrations?

Not all, and some publish late. We check your council before you sign up, and show you the real numbers in a free snapshot.

Can I cancel?

Yes. It's rolling monthly, with 30 days' notice.
